Ability, Ambience and Awareness: Mary Seacole raise funds for homeless youth

Written by Paula Devine | 23 Nov 2012

Around 300 people from various voluntary agencies together with staff and the general public attended a stunning fundraising ball for The Mary Seacole Housing Association Limited.

The event was a huge success, highlighting the plight of young homeless people, the reasons for their homelessness, how they felt and some of the choices that they made as a result of their dilemma.

Three residents of the Association volunteered to participated in the event; two spoke about their real life experiences and one of them sang a very touching song for the audience. Many commented on how moved they were by the actual experiences and how much they had enjoyed the event.

After the speeches, the audience was entertained by a dance troupe, sponsored by the Pop up Events Management, which provides pop up options such as Christmas Pop up Shops, Fashion Shows, and Themed Nights. The events are marketed, set up and run within charities by young people who attend Hastingsbury School. There is a small cost to the organisation, but a percentage of the profit raised from the Pop up Event is donated back to charity.

Hastingsbury has successfully secured funding from Peter Jones as part of the Tycoon in Schools project. Tycoon in Schools is a brand new nationwide campaign to get Britain’s school children involved in entrepreneurship. It gives young people a real opportunity to have a go at starting a business.

Said Audrey Lewis, Chief Executive of Mary Seacole:

'We would certainly recommend Pop up Events. It enables young people to get involved with community initiatives, and demonstrates their abilities while also supporting small charities with events that they would find it hard to facilitate and manage. Thank you Pop up Events!'

Dance troupe, Hype who wowed the audience with their break dancing routine, were followed by another dance act consisting of two young men who had appeared on Britain’s Got Talent. Last but not least was a young singer who sang the new James Bond song, ‘Skyfall’ in the style of Adele. The audience were thrilled and everyone was amazed that a young 14 years old could sing with such confidence and poise.

Those who attended were full of praise for the event saying it made them feel proud to be part of helping the young people and congratulating Mary Seacole and the young people involved on the wonderful ambience and superb entertainment.

Said one:

'Wow what a fantastic night, again you have exceeded expectations’. All my friends thoroughly enjoyed themselves and want to come next year, they are thinking of friends who they want to invite next year. It is already in my diary.'
