Businesses need certainty on post-Brexit trading practicalities

Written by Paula Devine | 07 Mar 2017

Commenting on the International Trade Committee’s report on UK Trade Options Beyond 2019, released today, Dr Adam Marshall, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said:

“The report highlights a number of key business priorities for our future relationship with the EU, such as maintaining mutual recognition of rules and standards, seeking a low- or no-tariff basis for trade, as well as clarity on future customs and border arrangements.

“Our surveys show that Europe will remain an important market for UK businesses in the future, so it’s crucial that the practicalities of trading across borders are sufficiently addressed in the negotiations, and don’t leave firms facing excessive adaptation costs and bureaucracy.

“We echo the Committee’s call for Government to provide as much certainty as possible, as early as possible. Businesses need to adapt to and plan for new trading arrangements with the EU, whilst also pursuing opportunities for new trading relationships across the world."
