Doing business in the new NHS

The NHS is the nation’s largest employer. It is also the single largest consumer of products and services in the UK. And it’s not just medical-related products and services; it consumes commodities across all sectors. It is essentially a huge CUSTOMER.
The NHS can also be hard to penetrate, not least for small companies. Knowing where to go to look for business can be as perplexing as trying to reach the centre of Hampton Court Maze (and some never get there!).
To top it all, the NHS always seems to be re-organising. Just as we had all become accustomed to Strategic Health Authorities and Primary Health Care Trusts, we hear they are to go and that there is to be a “New NHS” with power and influence wielded by GP Consortia and structures such as Academic Health Science Partnerships. And there are “Commissioners” which we gather means these are the people with the authority to decide “what gets purchased and from whom”.
This is the background to our Knowledge Network event on November 6th. Dr Anne Blackwood, CEO NHS Innovations East, will be our lead speaker. NHS Innovations East is a company set up almost ten years ago to help NHS professionals, innovators and suppliers to work better together.
Anne will be joined by Karen Livingstone, Industry Lead, Eastern Academic Health Science Network. Together they will attempt to unravel “the secrets of the Maze”. They will discuss the new NHS structure and how it is organised to procure products and services, with special reference to the role and importance of smaller companies. SMEs do play a big part in supplying the NHS but far greater potential exists.
